GULU RISES
In 2005, Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army would storm the Ugandan countryside, breaking kids down into dead-eyed child soldiers and terrorizing the population. The region is well into a period of recovery now, and an extension of this process is the Gulu United Football Club’s youth academy. The project is spearheaded by Adrian Bradbury, the Canadian who also was also behind GuluWalk, in a push to rebuild the bankrupted Gulu United Football Club, largely through a youth academy of 50 kids chosen from nearly 1,000 hopefuls around the region. If just a single player can ride a confluence of skill, schooling and opportunity to something bigger, the payoff for the club and community could be enormous.
